How to Sell Art Prints (Without Losing Your Mind)

ree

When I first dipped my brush into the idea of selling art, I was convinced I needed a PhD in tech just to open an online shop.

Setting up a website? Scary.

Buying expensive gear without knowing if it would ever pay off? Terrifying.

And don’t even get me started on photographing my art. (Let’s just say my first attempts made my paintings look like they’d been printed on a potato.) 🥔🎨

Overall - overwhelming!

But here’s the truth: every artist starts messy.

I finally decided to tackle my fears by joining an online product photography course for artists (shoutout to the fabulous Amy Eaton 🙌). That one decision changed everything.

My Etsy Experiments (and Epic Fails)

My second Etsy shop, BabyNoom, was meant for nursery art. Cute, whimsical… until I tried to make prints.

The colors came out flat, dull, and sad. (Basically like coffee without caffeine. Nobody wants that.)

So I tinkered, tested, failed, tinkered some more… and eventually discovered a print-making workflow that actually worked. Now I use it every time I digitize my art.

You’re Not Alone: Artist Survey Results

I totally understand those fears that bubble up when you're just starting out.

So, I decided to reach out to my fellow artists and students and conduct a little survey and the results made me laugh, cry, and want to buy us all a round of coffee:

And you know what I found? Turns out, many artists are together in this boat!

  • 53% of artists want to sell art but haven’t started yet.

  • 15% are already selling online + in-person.

  • 92% (!!) want to start making art prints.

And guess what? The #1 struggle was exactly what I faced: taking high-quality photos of art and turning them into crisp, professional digital files.

Why You Should Sell Art Prints

Here’s why I (and thousands of artists) swear by selling prints:

  • Affordable entry point – more people can collect your art.

  • Steady income stream – multiple sales from one piece.

  • Test your market – see which designs collectors actually love.

  • Build your brand – your art starts showing up everywhere.

  • Offer flexibility – prints in multiple sizes = more options for buyers.

Fun fact: prints are now my biggest revenue stream (yep, even more than originals).

This is my revenue from art sales for last year, and you can see that prints are by far the largest stream of income

How to Get Started (Without Fancy Gear)

Sure, you could pay pro photographers or run to a print shop every time you've created a new art… but that eats money and time like crazy.

Instead, I built a system that lets me:

  • Photograph art at home (without pro gear)

  • Edit and prep digital files for print

  • Automate sales so I literally wake up to “you made a sale!” emails
